The Ultimate 2026 Winter Olympics Unit Study: 3 Weeks of Open-and-Go Lesson Plans

We are just a few days away from the start of February, which means we are officially getting ready for our Winter Olympics unit. With the Milano-Cortina games beginning on Feb. 6, I wanted to share the simple flow we are planning to follow in our home. I have always found that the Olympics offer such a beautiful framework for learning because they touch on many subjects, from geography and history to the physics of movement and the grit of the human spirit.

Because I know how much work it can be to pull together resources while also managing a busy home, I decided to put our entire three-week schedule into a printable guide that you can download for free.

The plan begins on February 2, giving us a few days to build anticipation before the opening ceremony in Milan. We will spend that first week grounded in the history of the games and Italy as our host.

Once the flame is lit on Friday, the guide shifts into the heart of the events. You will find activities like a paper lift STEM challenge to understand the physics of ski jumping, research assignments, a PE challenge, and an egg drop experiment to learn about the engineering of safety gear.

Every day includes a core activity designed for all ages, alongside deeper extensions for older students, such as researching the Refugee Team or studying the centripetal force of short track skating. It is a complete three week roadmap that turns the excitement of the games into a season of discovery for the whole family.

So just to recap, here's what's included:

  • Complete 3-Week Schedule: A daily flow from February 2nd through the closing ceremonies on February 22nd, plus a unit wrap-up celebration.
  • Multidisciplinary Integration: Activities covering multiple subjects.
  • Built in Flexibility: Core all ages activities with specific extensions for older students.
  • Hands-on STEM: Detailed instructions for experiments on lift, centripetal force, and safety engineering.
  • Host Country Study: Resources for exploring Italian culture, the geography of the Alps, and the history of the Arena di Verona.
  • Community Connection: Plan for tracking medals and following the inspiring stories of individual athletes.

I am planning to do a bit of a follow along on Instagram as we move through these weeks, sharing our favorite resources and the ways we are integrating the games into our normal rhythm.
