There is something so magical about watching your kids fall in love with a good story. For us, that magic has always lived in the pages of mythology, especially since their dad instilled a deep love for these ancient stories through bedtime readings and imaginative play when they were little.
With the new Odyssey movie out in theaters, it felt like the absolute perfect time to bring some mythological magic into our everyday studies. Since our teen and tween are huge Rick Riordan and mythology fans, diving deeper into these classic tales felt like the most natural next step in our homeschool. Whenever a big adaptation comes around, I always want our home to feel immersed in the world behind it first. These stories are not just old myths from a dusty textbook. They are packed with epic adventures, flawed heroes, and timeless lessons.
This time around, we wanted to expand the scope far beyond just the myths. We are spending a couple of weeks exploring not only the pantheon, the fall of Troy, and Odysseus's long voyage across the Mediterranean, but also diving into ancient philosophy with Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, early science and math with Archimedes, and hands-on engineering through Ancient Greek architecture.
It's a wonderful chance to incorporate something our kids are genuinely excited about into our learning, which in my opinion is the best kind of learning! Whether you're prepping for a family movie night like us, adding a little extra wonder to your schooling, or just looking for a fun excuse to dive into some good books together, I hope this helps you make some wonderful memories with your kids.
